Homelessness prevention services are available to anyone who is at risk of homelessness. Homelessness services are also available to anyone who is actually homeless. These services are provided by the Council under the provisions of the Housing (Wales) Act 2014. The options available to you will vary depending on your circumstances. Some of the options may include:

  • Advice, guidance on your housing options
  • Help to either maintain your existing home or securing alternative accommodation
  • Practical help and advice to find a private rented property
  • Mediation services
  • Provision of support services where appropriate
  • Help with completing forms and referrals for other services
  • Some financial assistance or support

If you present as homeless you will be advised of all the options available to you and will be provided with clear help, assistance and guidance on what can be done to help you resolve your housing issues. Even if you are not homeless or threatened with homelessness we can still offer you advice and assistance in resolving any problems you may have.

The most important thing is you contact us as soon as you experience difficulties in maintaining your accommodation or receive notice to leave.

Co-Produce Solutions

Homelessness legislation places a responsibility on you as an individual to fully engage with the process, and to undertake all reasonable steps idenitifed, which can alleviate your predicament. The Council will of course do its part, but the best solutions are agreed with yourself the client.

Will accommodation be provided if I have nowhere to stay?

If you are homeless and have a priority need then we may be under a duty to provide you with temporary accommodation. A prioirty need is effectively some sort of vulnerability as defined by legislation.

Is there a guarantee of accommodation through Living Merthyr Tydfil?

Even if you are homeless or at risk of homelessness you will not always be offered accommodation through Living Merthyr Tydfil. We will also explore opportunities for you in the private rented sector.

Based on your circusmtances you could be given additional priority on the common housing register following an assessment and evidence provided of your housing needs and your priority need. This will not apply unless you are actually homeless or under court notice to leave your current accommodation. Our Housing Solutions Team will be able to explain all the options to you and what is required of you in order to secure accommodation.
